Faf du Plessis Takes Ownership in European T20 Premier League

Faf du Plessis and Jonty Rhodes are taking a significant step into team ownership in the European T20 Premier League, aiming to develop local talent in Dutch cricket. This venture marks an exciting chapter for both cricketers as they co-own the Rotterdam Dockers, one of six franchises in the league.
The European T20 Premier League aims to boost cricket in Europe and create pathways for local talent. With the inaugural season set to run from August 26 to September 20, anticipation is building around this new franchise cricket model.
Du Plessis, who has extensive experience in various franchise leagues worldwide, believes that local Dutch players will be crucial for his team’s success. He stated, “It’s not your overseas players that win you competitions, it’s the local players.” This perspective underscores a growing recognition of homegrown athletes’ importance in competitive sports.
Jonty Rhodes echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for nurturing talent: “The ETPL offers exactly that, creating pathways to identify, nurture, and scale talent, and ultimately strengthening the game across Europe.” His involvement suggests a commitment not just to the Rotterdam Dockers but also to elevating cricket standards throughout the continent.
The league features six city-based teams including Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh. Five of these franchises have already been sold with one still under negotiation. The total value of these franchises is around £11.1 million over a ten-year period—a clear indicator of the investment interest in cricket’s growth in Europe.
Rhodes admitted that while it’s an exciting venture, there is a level of apprehension involved: “It is an exciting place to be, (but) it’s a bit scary.” This duality captures the essence of innovation within sports—risk often accompanies opportunity.
As observers look ahead, many expect that this initiative could significantly impact cricket development in the Netherlands and beyond. The involvement of figures like Abhishek Bachchan as co-owner adds a layer of intrigue to this enterprise. The next steps will likely focus on establishing a competitive framework that prioritizes local talent while attracting international attention.
