Presidential Presence at World Cup Final

The World Cup final saw Spain defeat Argentina, but the trophy presentation was marked by the presence of the US President, who joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the field. The president’s arrival at the stadium was via Marine One, with his helicopter flying over the venue approximately 45 minutes before kick-off. He watched the match from a luxury suite alongside Infantino and other dignitaries, including Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canada’s prime minister, and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.

During the trophy presentation after Spain’s victory, both the US President and Infantino were met with boos from spectators. Reports indicated that the ambient crowd noise increased when the US President entered the field. Following the presentation of the World Cup trophy to Spain, the US President attempted to remain with the celebrating team on the podium before Infantino reportedly guided him away.

Political Undertones and Past Appearances

This incident at the World Cup final echoed a similar event at the Club World Cup held at the same stadium last summer, where the US President presented the trophy to Chelsea and attempted to join their celebrations. The US President has made several appearances at sporting events since his re-election, including the Super Bowl, the US Open tennis tournament, the Daytona 500, and golf’s Ryder Cup. This year, he has attended various golf events, college football’s national championship game, and Game 3 of the NBA finals, where he also received boos from the home crowd.

This marked the first time the US President attended a match at this summer’s World Cup, which the US co-hosted with Canada and Mexico. Historically, the 2022 World Cup final saw Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani join Infantino to award the trophy to Lionel Messi and the Argentina team. In 2018, Vladimir Putin presented the trophy to Kylian Mbappé and France after their victory in Russia. The current US President is the first sitting US president to attend a World Cup final on home soil; his predecessor, Bill Clinton, did not attend the 1994 tournament hosted by the US, with Al Gore presenting the trophy instead.

The US President and Infantino reportedly share a close relationship. The US President had previously contacted the FIFA president to advocate for a review of USA striker Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension before their last-16 match. FIFA subsequently reversed Balogun’s ban.

Tournament Logistics and Future Hosting

The tournament experienced various logistical challenges, including transportation issues, security bottlenecks, and high ticket prices. There were also complaints from Iran regarding visa problems and perceived unfriendly treatment. Despite these issues, the anticipated negative outcomes did not materialise. Instead, host cities reported positive economic impacts, with increased spending from football fans.

The US President has expressed a desire for the World Cup to return to the United States immediately and remain there permanently. However, the World Cup rotates continents every four years, with the next tournament in 2030 scheduled to be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
