Pat Cummins Faces Setback as IPL 2026 Approaches

Pat Cummins, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been managing a back issue since last year, which has significantly impacted his playing schedule. As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season approaches, Cummins has confirmed that he will miss the start of the tournament, a disappointing development for both him and his team.

In a recent statement, Cummins expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I’m still recovering from a back injury, but it’s good. I’m back bowling in the nets.” He further added, “I won’t make the start of that, but it shouldn’t be too long before I’m back out there playing.” This indicates that while he is making progress, he is not yet ready to compete at the level required for the IPL.

As Cummins continues his rehabilitation, he has outlined a plan to return to competitive cricket, aiming to play in the latter half of IPL 2026 if his recovery goes smoothly. “We’ve mapped out a plan to get me right by (the) middle of the tournament, so hopefully, if nothing goes wrong, (I will) play the back half plus the finals,” he noted.

In Cummins’ absence, Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the interim captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kishan’s leadership experience, particularly his successful captaincy stint with his local side over the past year, has been highlighted as a positive factor for the team during this transitional period.

Compounding Cummins’ challenges, he has played only one competitive match since July last year, and he has also missed out on participating in the T20 World Cup due to a minor setback. This has raised concerns about his fitness and readiness for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, which runs from August 13 to 26.
