Perumbalam Bridge: A New Connection for Kerala

What is the significance of the Perumbalam Bridge?

The recent inauguration of the Perumbalam Bridge raises an important question: how will this new infrastructure impact the lives of residents on Perumbalam Island? The answer is significant, as the bridge is expected to ease travel for approximately 12,000 residents by providing a direct road link to the mainland.

The bridge, dedicated to the nation by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, stands as the longest bridge built across Vembanad Lake in Kerala, measuring 1157 meters in length and 11 meters in width. It was constructed at a cost of Rs 106 crore using funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

Details of the Bridge’s Construction

The Perumbalam Bridge features three rainbow-colored bowstring arches at its center, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. It comprises 27 spans of 35 meters each, along with three bow-string arch spans of 55 meters each.

This bridge fulfills a long-standing demand of the residents of Perumbalam Island, who have sought a reliable connection to the mainland for years. As noted by Dalima Jojo MLA, “The bridge was only a dream for the local people once and the Vijayan government had made it a reality for them now.”

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Vijayan emphasized the importance of the bridge, questioning, “If the LDF government is not in power, who would have taken care of the people of Perumbalam?” This statement highlights the political significance of the project and its role in local governance.

As the bridge opens, it is expected to transform the daily lives of residents by improving access to essential services and economic opportunities. However, the full extent of its impact will unfold over time as the community adapts to this new infrastructure.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding future maintenance plans and additional infrastructure developments that may accompany the bridge’s opening. Nevertheless, the Perumbalam Bridge marks a significant milestone in Kerala’s infrastructure development, promising to enhance connectivity and support local growth.
