Midfield Targets Elude Manchester United
Manchester United have encountered difficulties in securing midfield targets this summer, with two primary options, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, now set to join rival clubs. Anderson, who was United’s first choice, has been the subject of a club-record deal between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, agreed on June 25. Fernandes, another player United were keen on, is reportedly moving to Tottenham after a deal was agreed with West Ham.
The cost associated with bringing these players to Old Trafford appears to be a significant factor in United missing out. The club’s recruitment strategy is currently under scrutiny as the transfer window progresses without new signings.
Current Squad Movements and Future Plans
As June transitioned into July, several players have departed Manchester United. Casemiro and Jadon Sancho, both out of contract, have left the club. Other notable players like Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana remain with the team. The only confirmed exit involving a transfer fee is Rasmus Hojlund, whose £38m move was finalised in May following Napoli’s qualification for the upcoming Champions League season.
While no new players have arrived yet, United have agreed a £35m deal with Serie A club Atalanta for midfielder Ederson. However, his medical examination is pending his participation with the Brazil squad in the World Cup. Brazil is scheduled to play Norway in the last 16 on July 5, meaning the medical will not occur until their involvement in the competition concludes.
The club aims to bring in at least one, and potentially two, additional midfield players. This indicates a clear intention to strengthen the central areas of the squad for the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, which is anticipated to be busier.
Alternative Midfield Options Being Considered
Following the missed targets, Manchester United are reportedly exploring other options for their midfield. Alex Scott of Bournemouth has been linked, though Arsenal has been informed that the 22-year-old is not available for transfer, and his current club is reportedly looking to secure him with a long-term contract. Another Bournemouth midfielder, Tyler Adams, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba have also been mentioned as potential targets.
Felix Nmecha, a former academy player at Manchester City, is another name being discussed. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, is familiar with Nmecha from his time as head of City’s academy. The situation of Real Madrid’s France international Aurelien Tchouameni is also being monitored, although it is currently believed he will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. United sources maintain that their recruitment approach is sound, citing the relative success of the previous summer’s transfer activity as evidence.
The pursuit of midfield reinforcements echoes the summer of 2022, when United spent a considerable period attempting to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Despite agreeing a deal worth an initial £63m with an additional £8.5m in add-ons, De Jong ultimately remained at Barcelona. This led United to pivot and sign Casemiro from Real Madrid for a fee of up to £70m, a move that proved successful. This historical context suggests that missing out on initial targets does not necessarily dictate the overall success of a transfer window.
The club’s data-led recruitment strategy means there is a comprehensive list of potential midfield candidates. While Anderson was seen as an ideal replacement for Casemiro due to his tactical fit, age, and Premier League experience, his cost and desire to join Manchester City made him unattainable. The decision regarding Mateus Fernandes was different; while United could have matched Tottenham’s bid, the fee was considered substantial for a promising but unproven young player. The club now faces the task of securing a midfielder who aligns with their desired profile and is available at an appropriate price, aiming to bolster their squad before the summer market closes.
