The first T20 International between India and England in Chester-le-Street was abandoned due to persistent rain on Wednesday. Despite the match being called off, India managed to post a competitive total of 189 for seven in their 20 overs, largely thanks to significant contributions from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer.
The rain began towards the end of India’s innings and intensified, preventing England’s chase from ever starting. With approximately 40 minutes remaining until the cut-off time for a five-over game, the umpires made the decision to abandon the match.
India’s Strong Batting Performance
India’s innings saw a notable recovery after an early struggle. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the team initially lost two quick wickets. Sanju Samson was dismissed by Saqib Mahmood, caught by Tom Banton, and Ishan Kishan was run out following a mix-up with Abhishek Sharma. This early setback left India with just six runs on the scoreboard, briefly bringing to mind their recent 0-2 series defeat against Ireland.
However, Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer then forged a crucial 82-run partnership for the third wicket, stabilising the innings. Abhishek Sharma, with his dynamic style, scored 59 runs. His aggressive play saw him reach a fifty off just 20 balls, demonstrating fearless strokeplay against the English bowlers.

He particularly targeted pacers Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood. Mahmood conceded 21 runs in one over, including a sequence of 4, 6, 6, while Shreyas also contributed a boundary in that over. Abhishek continued his assault even after the Powerplay, hitting a hat-trick of fours off Luke Wood, which helped India reach an impressive 61 for two in the Powerplay overs.
Abhishek’s innings concluded when he was trapped leg before wicket by Sam Curran. Following his departure, captain Shreyas Iyer took charge, anchoring the middle overs. He scored a composed 68 runs, marking his first T20I half-century as captain. Iyer focused on finding gaps and staying at the crease, allowing other batsmen to play more aggressively.

Despite his more measured approach, Iyer demonstrated his hitting ability with a powerful pull shot off leg-spinner Adil Rashid for a four, and later a lofted six over extra cover off Luke Wood. He reached his fifty in 38 balls. Iyer eventually fell leg before to Saqib Mahmood, by which point India had reached 165 runs.
Late Contributions and Match Abandonment
Towards the end of the innings, all-rounder Shivam Dube played a significant cameo, scoring an unbeaten 42 runs off 21 balls. His late burst helped propel India’s total closer to the 190-run mark, setting a challenging target under the gloomy conditions in Durham.
Saqib Mahmood was the most successful bowler for England, taking three wickets for 33 runs. However, England’s opportunity to chase the target of 190 was denied by the weather. The incessant rain forced the umpires to call off the game, resulting in no result for the first match of the series.
The second match of the five-match T20 International series is scheduled to be played in Manchester on July 4.
