Commercial LPG Gas Cylinder Price Hits Record High

The government has implemented a record increase in commercial LPG gas cylinder prices amidst a global energy crisis. Effective May 1, 2026, these changes will impact various sectors, particularly hotels and restaurants that rely heavily on LPG for their operations.

In recent months, tensions in West Asia have led to supply disruptions, causing global crude oil prices to surge sharply. As a result, the government approved the largest increase in the price of commercial LPG cylinders and 5 kg gas cylinders.

The price of commercial LPG (19 kg cylinders) has increased by an average of ₹993. In Delhi, for instance, the price rose from ₹2,078.50 to ₹3,071.50. Similarly, in Mumbai, it jumped from ₹2,031 to ₹3,024.

Key changes include:

  • The price of 5 kg market-priced LPG cylinders increased from ₹549 to ₹810.50.
  • Domestic LPG prices remain unchanged despite the increase in commercial rates.
  • The price of bulk diesel has risen from ₹137 per litre to over ₹149 per litre.

Officials have not confirmed whether further adjustments will follow. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that retail pump prices for petrol and diesel have been kept unchanged amidst this turmoil.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi remarked on the situation: “Please check other parts of the world on how much prices have risen there. We could withhold to this extent.” This statement underscores the government’s balancing act amid rising costs globally.

The implications of this price hike are significant for businesses already grappling with increased operational costs due to inflation and other factors. As they adapt to these new realities, many will be forced to reconsider pricing strategies or even operational viability.
