Suriname: Tragic Loss for : Former President Chandrikapersad Santokhi Passes Away

Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the former President of Suriname, has died at the age of 67, a development that has sent shockwaves through the nation and the global Indian diaspora. Santokhi, who served as President from 2020 until 2025, was known for his efforts in stabilizing Suriname’s economy after taking over from former dictator Desi Bouterse.
His presidency was marked by significant challenges, including protests demanding his resignation due to soaring fuel and electricity prices. Despite these hurdles, Santokhi’s administration was credited with achieving economic stability, largely supported by an IMF program.
Before his presidency, Santokhi held the position of Minister of Justice and Police from 2005 to 2010, where he earned the nickname ‘The Sheriff’ for his tough stance on crime. He was also known for leading the investigation into the 1982 killings of political opponents, a dark chapter in Suriname’s history that claimed the lives of 15 individuals.
Born into an Indo-Surinamese family, Santokhi had a deep appreciation for Indian culture, which was evident when he took his oath of office in Sanskrit. This gesture resonated with the 27% of Suriname’s population of Indian descent, further solidifying his connection to the community.
His death has prompted reactions from various leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his sorrow, stating, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of my friend and the former President of Suriname, Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi Ji. This is not only an irreparable loss to Suriname but also to the global Indian diaspora.”
Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, the current President of Suriname, remarked that “his years of service in various public functions will be remembered,” highlighting the lasting impact of Santokhi’s contributions to the nation.
Rob Jetten, a prominent political figure, noted, “As President, and in his other roles, he meant a great deal to Suriname,” emphasizing the void left by his passing.
Chandrikapersad Santokhi’s legacy will undoubtedly be a subject of discussion in the coming days as Suriname reflects on his contributions and the challenges that lie ahead. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
