“I believe it is an insult to the national flag,” stated advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar, who has filed a complaint against cricketer Hardik Pandya for allegedly disrespecting the Indian national flag during T20 World Cup celebrations.

The complaint was submitted at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Ahmedabad, following India’s victory over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final. The incident reportedly involved Pandya lying down with the national flag wrapped around him during the celebrations.

Bidkar argues that Pandya’s actions violate the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. He emphasized, “According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag.”

The T20 World Cup final took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs, marking their third T20 World Cup title, having previously won in 2007 and 2024.

Videos of Pandya’s celebrations quickly went viral on social media, showing him dancing and lying down with the flag. The complainant insists that the national flag represents the entire country, which allowed him to file the complaint in Pune.

“The national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint here,” Bidkar added, highlighting the significance of the flag in representing national pride.

The police have confirmed that they received the application but have not provided further details on any potential action that may be taken against Pandya.
