Taranjit Singh Sandhu was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on March 5, 2026, by President Droupadi Murmu, marking a significant transition in the administration.
Sandhu replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena in this pivotal role, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his extensive diplomatic career. Born on January 23, 1963, in Punjab, Sandhu has deep roots in Indian history, with his grandfather, Teja Singh Samundri, being a noted freedom fighter, and his father, Bishan Singh Samundri, serving as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University.
He completed his early education at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Furthering his academic credentials, Sandhu holds a Master’s in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, Sandhu has dedicated over 35 years to various diplomatic postings. Notably, he served as the Indian Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, a role that positioned him as one of India’s leading experts on U.S. relations.
In addition to his ambassadorship, Sandhu was the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020, and he also held the position of Consul General in Frankfurt from 2011 to 2013.
In the political arena, Sandhu contested from the Amritsar constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, securing approximately 22.88% of the votes and finishing in third place. Following this, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on March 19, 2024.
Observers note that Sandhu’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Delhi, as the city navigates various administrative challenges. His extensive background in diplomacy and governance is expected to influence his approach to the role.
