Shreyas Iyer Aims for Fresh Start in Zimbabwe T20I Series

Shreyas Iyer, captain of the India T20I team, is looking to move past recent series defeats against Ireland and England as the team prepares for an upcoming series against Zimbabwe. The India squad, featuring several new and returning players, aims to adapt quickly to the conditions and play as a cohesive unit.

Iyer acknowledged that the team’s initial performance in his captaincy tenure has been challenging. After taking charge of a side that had previously won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier in the year, India experienced a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland. This was followed by a tour of England where they were winless in a five-match series, losing 4-0 after the first game was called off due to rain.

Reflecting on these experiences, Iyer described the Ireland tour as a “reality check.” He noted that while the England tour was a “rough patch,” it also provided valuable insights into team building, awareness, and adaptability required on the field. He emphasized that the challenging results have brought the team closer together, fostering discussions about their future approach, particularly against Zimbabwe.

New Faces and Adaptability

The upcoming series against Zimbabwe will see a number of fresh faces in the India squad. Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma have received their first T20I call-ups, and wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh is also in contention for his international debut. Additionally, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Harsh Dubey, and Suryansh Shedge recently joined the team, while Mayank Yadav returns after an injury layoff, having last played for India in T20I matches.

Iyer, who will be playing in Zimbabwe for the first time himself, expressed his eagerness to adapt quickly to the local conditions. He intends to empower the younger players, encouraging them to play without the “fear of failure.” He believes that removing this fear allows players to perform at their best and contribute effectively to the team. His message to the young players is to focus on the present and play unified cricket, prioritizing team benefit over individual performance.

Among the young talents, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, despite recent challenges and a brief international stint, remains confident. He acknowledged experiencing “several ups and downs” over the past four months but is focused on delivering a strong performance. Sooryavanshi made his international debut against England, becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer. He played three matches in the England T20I series before being left out of the final match.

Sooryavanshi was a key member of India’s U-19 World Cup campaign in February, where he played a significant role in the final against England at the same venue where the upcoming series will be held. He expressed that this ground holds special memories for him, having won the U-19 World Cup there. He hopes to leverage his familiarity with the pitches and conditions in Harare, applying his previous learnings to the upcoming matches.

Overcoming Setbacks

The path back to captaincy has not been without its difficulties for Iyer, who has faced a series of serious injuries in recent years. A back injury in 2023 kept him out for a significant portion of the year, though he returned for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The issue resurfaced during the 2024 Test series against England, leading to another period on the sidelines.

In October 2025, Iyer sustained a spleen laceration with internal bleeding while attempting a catch in an ODI against Australia, which necessitated hospitalization and intensive care. Despite these significant challenges, Iyer stated that he has embraced the lessons from each setback. He believes these experiences have strengthened him mentally, making him more confident and better equipped to handle pressure both on and off the field. The Zimbabwe T20I series is scheduled to begin on 23 July.
