Aston Villa has initiated discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential move for winger Alejandro Garnacho. The proposed deal is for a loan, though Chelsea is reportedly seeking a permanent element to be included in any agreement for the player.
Reports indicate that Chelsea is prepared to sell Garnacho in the current transfer window. The player has not yet returned to pre-season training as he seeks a resolution regarding his future.
Transfer Discussions and Club Interest
The discussions between Aston Villa and Chelsea are said to be advanced. The proposed deal involves an initial season-long loan with a conditional obligation to buy, though the specifics are still being negotiated.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has shown previous interest in Garnacho, having admired the winger before his move to Chelsea from Manchester United. Emery is reportedly pushing for this move to happen.
Other clubs have also expressed interest in Garnacho. Roma is among the teams interested in signing the player, and there are also admirers in the Saudi Pro League. However, Aston Villa believes it has been able to convince Garnacho to join them.
This potential transfer follows a separate agreement between the two clubs for Morgan Rogers, who is set to move to Stamford Bridge in a club-record transfer for Chelsea, valued at £117 million. Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional year.
Player Performance and Financial Considerations
Garnacho, who is 22 years old, joined Chelsea from Manchester United last summer. During his first season with Chelsea, he reportedly struggled to secure a regular starting position, making 22 starts across all competitions, with 14 of those in the Premier League. He scored eight goals during this period.
Analysis suggests that Garnacho‘s impact was limited in an already crowded left-hand side for Chelsea. He played 1217 Premier League minutes across 25 appearances last season, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. This is less than both Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who played 1528 and 1527 minutes respectively in the same position for Villa.
His five goal involvements meant an average of one every 243 minutes, which is less frequent than Rogers‘ record of a goal involvement every 90 minutes and Buendia‘s every 190 minutes. If Garnacho joins Villa, it could necessitate adjustments to Unai Emery‘s system, particularly regarding the winger’s tendency to stay wide rather than cut inside.
Chelsea, despite not being in Europe this season, will still be subject to UEFA‘s financial rules. The club entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last summer for breaching regulations and aims to demonstrate financial sustainability. Chelsea has already generated approximately from player sales this summer, including players like Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, and Tyrique George.
