The Indian batting unit’s struggles on challenging wickets are a key point of discussion as they prepare to face England in a five-match T20 International series. The series is set to begin on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
The potential debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been a topic of interest. India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate stated that Sooryavanshi must follow a process to earn a place in the playing eleven, though he also indicated the 15-year-old appears ready.
Batting Concerns and Player Selection
The Indian team recently experienced a setback with two losses against Ireland, which has led to discussions about potential changes. Ten Doeschate acknowledged a sense of disbelief within the camp following these results.
The performance of Sanju Samson, who failed in both matches against Ireland, could lead to him being benched. This might pave the way for Sooryavanshi to open alongside Abhishek Sharma, whose 20-ball 49 in the first T20I in Belfast could secure his spot.
Ishan Kishan also had a modest outing against Ireland, scoring 1 and 12. The management might consider benching either Samson or Kishan to accommodate Sooryavanshi, while also weighing the impact on the morale of the omitted player.
Despite Samson’s strong performance in the latter stages of the T20 World Cup earlier this year and two centuries for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, the team’s leadership, including chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, is reportedly open to making tough decisions.
Other young players, Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav, made their debuts against Ireland, with Sooryavanshi still awaiting his national cap. Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar suggested that Sooryavanshi should play from the first match in England, advocating for dropping out-of-form batters.
One proposed batting order, if the Samson-Abhishek opening pair is maintained, could see Sooryavanshi at number three, followed by Kishan at four, Shreyas Iyer at five, Tilak Varma at six, Shivam Dube at seven, and Axar Patel at eight. This arrangement might involve dropping Suryansh Shedge from the first match against England.
If Shivam Dube plays at number seven, he would be expected to bowl four overs regularly, as Abhishek Sharma is the only other part-time left-arm spinner in the top order. However, Dube is considered a sixth bowling option at best.
Challenges Ahead for Indian Batters
The inclusion of Sooryavanshi is not seen as a complete solution to India’s broader batting issues. The Indian batters appeared uncomfortable in the conditions at Belfast, which favored pacers, struggling when aggressive batting options were limited by the pitch and precise bowling.
In the second T20I, Tilak Varma showed resilience with a measured fifty, but his patience eventually ran out after 46 balls. This impatience was observed among several Indian batters while chasing achievable targets of 183 and 155.
The conditions in England are expected to be similar, with England possessing a more experienced and skilled bowling attack. England’s pace battery includes Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Saqib Mahmood, and Sonny Baker, complemented by the spin of Aadil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed.
The average T20I score at the Riverside Ground is 138, with a highest score of 195 across eight previous matches, indicating a dominance of bowlers. If Indian batters fail to adapt quickly, England could gain an early advantage in the series.
India’s new T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, will aim to avoid another series defeat. England’s batting lineup also features powerful hitters such as captain Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Phil Salt, and Tom Banton.
During the matches against Ireland, Indian bowlers struggled to maintain pressure in the middle overs after initial breakthroughs. A similar performance against England’s batters could be exploited more severely. This highlights the need for a more coordinated effort from Indian bowlers, particularly the spinners Axar Patel, Shedge, and Washington Sundar, who have been largely ineffective.
The match is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2026.
