Neymar reacts to mathematician’s World Cup prediction after Brazil’s victory

Neymar’s Social Media Reaction

Neymar, the Brazilian football star, engaged in a social media exchange following Brazil’s 2-1 comeback victory against Japan in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. Despite not playing in the match, Neymar took to X to address German economist Joachim Klement, whose statistical model had predicted Brazil’s elimination at this stage of the tournament.

The post, which roughly translates to “Mr Joachim Klement… please try again at the next World Cup,” was a direct response to Klement’s forecast. Klement, known for accurately predicting the last three World Cup champions, had used a complex mathematical model to project the outcomes of the tournament.

Social media users reacted to Neymar’s message, with some criticising the forward’s attitude given he did not feature in the match. Neymar had been a last-minute addition to coach Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man roster for the tournament.

Brazil’s Dramatic Victory and Coaching Strategy

Brazil secured their place in the Round of 16 with a dramatic 2-1 win over Japan. The decisive goal came in the 95th minute from Gabriel Martinelli, completing a second-half comeback. This hard-fought victory took place in front of a packed stadium on Monday.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti provided insight into his decision not to play Neymar during the match. Ancelotti explained that he had initially planned to introduce Neymar in the second half if the scores were not level. However, once the match remained drawn, he opted to preserve the star player for potential extra time.

Ancelotti stated, “I talked to Ney (Neymar), if we don’t draw, he’d come on at 60 minutes. Since we drew, I was preserving him for the 30 minutes of extra time.” This strategic decision meant Neymar remained on the sidelines, warming up but ultimately not entering the game.

Klement’s Predictive Model

Joachim Klement’s mathematical model, which had predicted Brazil’s exit, is built on a combination of economic variables, demographic data, and sporting metrics. This model aims to estimate the success probabilities for each national team participating in the World Cup.

Key factors analysed by Klement’s model include the GDP per capita of each country, which serves as an indicator for investment levels and sports infrastructure. The model also considers the total population size, which can influence the talent pool, and the cultural importance of football within a society.

Additionally, the current position of a team in the world rankings is factored in. Klement’s model also incorporates an element of chance, designed to reflect the inherent unpredictability of a tournament like the World Cup. According to Klement, this final variable is particularly relevant for the 2026 edition due to the new format, which includes an additional round of direct knockout games, increasing the likelihood of an underdog eliminating a favoured team in a single match.

Klement’s model had previously predicted that the Netherlands would win the World Cup, eliminating Spain in the semi-finals and defeating Portugal in the final. Brazil will now proceed to face either Ivory Coast or Norway in the Round of 16 on July 5 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
