Malaysia Steps in for Bahrain Grand Prix
Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed that Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. The race is scheduled to take place at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4, 2026, positioned between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix. This arrangement ensures the preservation of a Grand Prix that might otherwise have been cancelled, with the rest of the 2026 schedule remaining unchanged.
The agreement was reached through collaboration between Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia. This event is contingent on final agreements and official sign-off, including approval from the World Motor Sport Council.
Sepang’s Return to the F1 Calendar
The Sepang International Circuit, which first hosted an F1 event in 1999, is recognised for its challenging layout, enthusiastic fans, and often unpredictable weather conditions. The circuit last hosted a race in 2017.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his satisfaction with Malaysia hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. He highlighted the sport’s capacity to adapt and find solutions, creating an exciting moment for fans. Domenicali also thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, along with their respective governments, for their commitment.
His Excellency Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, commended the collaborative effort that will bring the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix to the Sepang International Circuit. He emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of teams, volunteers, officials, and fans were paramount throughout the process. Ben Sulayem also noted Malaysia’s significant historical connection with Formula 1 and the strong relationship with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated that the decision was made with the blessings of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar. He views this as a wonderful experience for fans globally, reflecting Bahrain’s dedication to the sport.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia extended his gratitude to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the people of Bahrain for their trust. He affirmed that this collaboration signifies the enduring friendship and partnership between Malaysia and Bahrain, while also showcasing Malaysia’s capability to host major international events.
Uncertainty for Other Races
While the Bahrain Grand Prix has found a new home, there is ongoing uncertainty regarding the final two scheduled races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi for the 2026 season. Formula 1 is reportedly developing contingency plans should these races be unable to proceed.
A decision on potential replacements for Qatar and Abu Dhabi is not expected until September. Several alternatives are being considered, with Imola in Italy being a likely candidate to host a race if needed. Other tracks, such as Portimao in Portugal and Istanbul Park in Turkey, are also under consideration, though they are considered less probable options.
Formula 1 aims to host at least 21 races in the 2026 season. Information regarding ticket sales for the Malaysian event will be released in due course.
