India clinched their three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Zimbabwe with a substantial 90-run victory in the second match held at Harare Sports Club. This win on Saturday gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
The foundation for India‘s triumph was laid by half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma. After being asked to bat first, India posted a formidable total of 219 for 5. They then dismissed Zimbabwe for 129, securing a comfortable win.
India’s Batting Performance
India‘s innings saw a strong recovery after losing both openers cheaply. Abhishek Sharma was caught at point, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed 20 runs off nine balls, which included a sequence of four, six, four, and four against Richard Ngarava. However, Sooryavanshi eventually mistimed a bouncer from Ngarava and was caught at mid-on.
Following the early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma took control. Kishan scored 81 runs off 44 balls, reaching his fifty in 31 deliveries before adding another 31 runs in just 13 balls. His scoring was particularly effective on the leg side, where he frequently found the boundary. He hit Brian Bennett for two fours through the mid-wicket region and later struck pacer Brad Evans for two fours and a six in the same area.
Kishan first built a 66-run partnership for the third wicket with captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 25. He then combined with Tilak Varma for a crucial 94-run stand for the fourth wicket, which came off 44 balls. Kishan was eventually caught in the deep after mistiming a slog at a wide delivery.
Tilak Varma remained unbeaten with 60 runs off 29 balls, reaching his fifty in just 23 deliveries. He attacked Zimbabwe‘s leading pacer Blessing Muzarabani with three successive boundaries. One of these boundaries came from a late dab behind point, utilising the bowler’s pace, and he also hit Evans for a six over mid-wicket. India managed to score 61 runs in their final five overs.
Zimbabwe’s Chase and Indian Bowling
Chasing a target of 220, Zimbabwe faced a record run chase. Opener Brian Bennett provided some early hope, playing an array of strokes to score 32 runs off 19 balls, which included three fours and three sixes. He took on debutant Yash Thakur, hitting him for a six and a four in succession. However, Thakur responded immediately, dismissing Bennett with a ramp shot caught by wicketkeeper Kishan. Thakur finished his T20I debut with figures of 2 for 30.
After Bennett‘s dismissal, Zimbabwe experienced a steady fall of wickets, making their task increasingly difficult. They lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129 in 17.5 overs. Ryan Burl and Tadi Marumani each made scores in the 20s, but Zimbabwe could not build any significant partnerships to pressure India.
The Indian bowlers maintained discipline throughout the innings, consistently picking up wickets. The slow left-arm bowling of Abhishek Sharma yielded the best figures, taking 3 wickets for 17 runs. Part-time spinner Tilak Varma also contributed with wickets. However, India did face an injury concern when pacer Prince Yadav left the field holding his hamstring after bowling 1.2 overs, finishing with figures of 2 for 10.
This victory marked Shreyas Iyer‘s first series win as captain in T20Is, following previous series losses under his leadership against Ireland (0-2) and England (0-4). India had also won the opening match of the series at Harare Sports Club by seven wickets with 40 balls to spare. The final clash of the series is scheduled for Sunday.
