Sanju Samson, a senior wicketkeeper-batter for India, has articulated a shift in his cricketing philosophy. He stated that he made a decision prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup to disregard external opinions and focus on playing the sport on his own terms. Samson expressed his desire to no longer be involved in what he described as the “rat race,” opting instead to trust his personal instincts.
This change in approach comes after Samson’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he scored three consecutive fifties as India secured the title. Following this success, he was not included in the squad for the Zimbabwe tour, which occurred after a period of reduced form during series against Ireland and England.
Samson reflected on the constant competitive environment within the country, stating that he decided against participating in it before the 2026 T20 World Cup. He emphasized his intention to simply enjoy the game. At 31, he believes he has several years left in his career and has chosen to play on his own terms, asserting that he will be the one to decide how he bats and what actions he takes.

Samson also shared an anecdote involving former India captain Virat Kohli from a national team camp. During a gym session, Samson sought advice from Kohli, who emphasized the importance of discipline and lifestyle for a sustained international career. Kohli, known for his clear and direct communication, highlighted the role of lifestyle choices in an athlete’s journey, including dietary habits that aid recovery.
Kohli’s advice centered on maintaining a specific lifestyle for a decade to achieve a great career. Samson initially followed this guidance for about a year and a half but admitted to not being able to maintain it consistently thereafter.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup semi-final against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Samson recounted how he disregarded discussions about his past struggles against England fast bowler Jofra Archer. Despite others reminding him of Archer having dismissed him multiple times previously, Samson maintained his confidence. He chose not to voice his certainty to avoid appearing arrogant, instead quietly indicating his readiness.
Samson felt that he had evolved as a batter, stating that he was not the same player he was a year prior. He credited a particular innings against the West Indies with providing him significant self-validation and eliminating self-doubt. This newfound confidence allowed him to approach the semi-final with a clear plan, convinced that he would perform for his country.
During the World Cup final against New Zealand, Samson felt the weight of responsibility as he had become the team’s primary run-scorer throughout the tournament. He acknowledged that form can fluctuate but recognized his role in accumulating runs for the team at that critical juncture. He explained that in the past, he might have panicked and attempted an aggressive shot, but his experiences from previous matches against the West Indies and England taught him the value of taking his time and understanding when to target specific bowlers. Looking forward, Samson prefers not to plan too far ahead, instead focusing on enjoying each opportunity.
