Glasgow: India’s Sachin Siwach advances in boxing, Sonowal Putul faces defeat

Boxing success for India

Indian boxer Sachin Siwach has advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s 60kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Siwach secured his spot by defeating Canada‘s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh in a closely contested opening-round bout held at the Scottish Event Campus. The victory came via a 4-1 split decision.

The match began with both southpaw boxers exchanging punches. Siwach‘s timing and connections were sharper in the first round, with three of the five judges scoring it 10-9 in his favour. Al-Ahmadieh, a bronze medallist in the 57kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, showed increased aggression in the second round. However, Siwach maintained composure and used well-timed counter-attacks, leading all five judges to award him the round.

In the final round, Al-Ahmadieh pressed the offensive. With a significant advantage on the scorecards, Siwach adopted a measured approach, controlling the pace and avoiding risks. Although three judges gave the final round to the Canadian, Siwach had established enough of a lead to secure the split decision victory. He is now set to face England‘s Will Hewitt in the last-16 clash on Monday. Hewitt previously upset Paris Olympic silver medallist Munarbek Seiitbek Uulu at last year’s World Boxing Championships in Liverpool.

Siwach is the second Indian boxer to progress at the Glasgow Games. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam had previously achieved a victory in the men’s 55kg round of 32 on Friday. India’s boxing squad for the Commonwealth Games consists of 14 members, with seven men and seven women competing across various weight categories. Additionally, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain has already secured at least a bronze medal, having received a direct entry into the semi-finals. Under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, both losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze medals, guaranteeing India an early medal on the podium.

Lawn bowls and gymnastics updates

In other events, Putul Sonowal of India faced a defeat in lawn bowls. Sonowal lost his match against Malaysia‘s Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple with a 2-0 sets score (8-4, 9-8). The match saw a dramatic End 7 in the second set, where Sonowal picked up 3 points, bringing the score to a close 9-8. However, Dzulkeple maintained his lead, securing the straight-sets victory.

Earlier in the match, Dzulkeple had taken a significant lead in Set 2, scoring a 4-point salvo in End 5, which brought the score to 9-4. Sonowal had managed to close the gap to 5-4 in Set 2 by picking up 2 points in End 4, following an official measurement. Despite the loss, Sonowal will be looking to finish strong in his remaining Section D fixtures. Dzulkeple, with a perfect 3-0 record, 9 game points, and a +18 shot difference, currently leads Section D. Only the section winner advances directly to the semi-finals, with no wildcard entries for runners-up. Sonowal sits second with 6 game points and a -8 shot difference, meaning his advancement depends on winning his remaining matches convincingly and hoping for a stumble from Malaysia.

In gymnastics, India is actively competing for a team medal. The team includes Eshitaa Rewale, Nishka Agarwal, Pranati Nayak, and Prathistha Samanta. Eshitaa Rewale initiated India‘s vault bid, earning 11.75 for her first attempt, though her landing could have been better. Nishika Agarwal faced a full mark deduction for touching the mat with her hand, resulting in a score of 11.45. Pranati Nayak then scored 11.95, contributing to India‘s gradual ascent on the scoreboard.

Pranati Nayak later achieved a score of 12.575 on the vault, moving her to fourth in the vault standings. Prathistha Samanta made a strong start on the vault, scoring 12.950 with her first attempt and then 13.025, placing her at the top of the vault standings. With the scores of Prathistha, Pranati, and Eshitaa combined, India currently stands fourth and will proceed to the next apparatus.
