France and Spain Set for World Cup Semi-Final Showdown in Dallas

France and Spain are preparing to face each other in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final in Dallas. Didier Deschamps, the coach for France, has described the upcoming match as potentially “spectacular.” This fixture will see two prominent European teams vying for a place in the final.

The French squad is looking to make history by becoming only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. Previously, West Germany achieved this between 1982 and 1990, and Brazil between 1994 and 2002. France previously won the World Cup in 2018 under Deschamps’ leadership and were beaten on penalties by Argentina in the 2022 final in Qatar.

Team Preparations and Expectations

Deschamps acknowledged Spain as favourites for the semi-final, noting their defensive record of conceding only one goal in six matches during the tournament. He expressed confidence in his team’s offensive capabilities, suggesting the match will be an exciting encounter. Deschamps is set to step down after the tournament, concluding a 14-year tenure.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente downplayed the favourite tag, stating that both are great national teams. He emphasised the pressure to perform well for their country and quoted Roman general Julius Caesar, saying, “you can’t win without suffering,” highlighting the demanding nature of achieving significant goals.

France has demonstrated strong attacking form throughout the tournament. Kylian Mbappe has been a key player, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. He is currently in contention for the Golden Boot, having equalled Lionel Messi’s record of eight goals. Mbappe’s performance has been crucial, with goals in every knockout round after scoring four in the group stages.

Another significant contributor for France is Michael Olise, who has provided five assists in the tournament. His partnership with Mbappe has been a notable feature of their campaign. Ousmane Dembele has also been prolific, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick in a group stage match against Norway and a goal against Morocco in the quarter-finals. The combined goal tally of Mbappe and Dembele stands at 13 for the tournament, a feat not seen from two players from the same country since Brazil’s Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002.

Key Players for Spain

For Spain, Lamine Yamal is considered a key attacking threat. Despite scoring only one goal in the tournament, against Saudi Arabia in a 4-0 group stage victory, he was named player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final win over Belgium. Yamal also scored against France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024. He has recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament so far and believes his movements help create opportunities for his team.

Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s leading scorer in the World Cup with four goals. He previously scored six goals during the qualification stages. Oyarzabal has a history of scoring crucial goals, including an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.

Mikel Merino is another player who could impact the game. Although he is unlikely to start, Merino has come off the bench to score late winners against Portugal and Belgium in this World Cup. He is expected to be a valuable option for Spain in the latter stages of the match against potentially tired opponents.

The semi-final is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 BST.
