Ecuador secures World Cup knockout stage spot with win over Germany

Ecuador advanced to the World Cup knockout stage after securing a 2-1 victory over Germany in the final match of Group E. The win, which took place on Thursday, ensures Ecuador progresses as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match saw Germany initially take the lead, but Ecuador responded with two goals, including a late winner from Gonzalo Plata. This result marks only the second time Ecuador has reached the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Match Highlights and Controversies

The game began with controversy as Leroy Sane put Germany ahead less than two minutes into the Group E clash. However, Ecuador protested the goal, arguing that a foul on Pedro Vite by Aleksandar Pavlovic with a high boot should have been called earlier in the play. Despite their complaints, the goal stood.

Ecuador quickly retaliated, with Nilson Angulo scoring an equaliser seven minutes after Germany‘s opener. Angulo‘s strike came after Felix Nmecha lost possession in his own half, allowing Ecuador to drill the ball past Manuel Neuer from a distance. The South American side, who had only secured one point in their initial two games, showed determination to stay in the tournament.

In the second half, Kai Havertz had an opportunity to put Germany back in front, testing Hernan Galindez with a header. Shortly after, Havertz believed he had won a penalty when Joel Ordonez challenged him in the box. However, VAR intervened, overturning the spot-kick due to a foul by Sane on Vite in the build-up to the play, much to Ecuador‘s relief.

Germany‘s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, made two injury-enforced changes to his lineup. Antonio Rudiger replaced Nico Schlotterbeck, who was ruled out of the World Cup due to ankle ligament damage. David Raum also started at left-back in place of Nathaniel Brown. Despite his recent strong performances, Nagelsmann opted not to start Deniz Undav, who had scored both goals in a previous 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast.

As the match progressed, Nagelsmann introduced Undav on the hour mark. However, Ecuador remained resolute. Enner Valencia‘s powerful shot was saved by Neuer, and a defensive miscommunication between Neuer and Jonathan Tah almost allowed Kevin Rodriguez to score. Plata then steered wide from a cross delivered by Moises Caicedo.

Sane had another chance to restore Germany‘s lead but shot weakly at Galindez. Ecuador capitalised on this miss when Rodriguez flicked on a corner, allowing Plata to score from close range, securing the 2-1 victory. This goal ended Germany‘s 11-match winning streak.

German Midfield Under Scrutiny

The performance of Germany‘s midfield drew particular attention following the defeat. Despite the team’s struggles in the central area, coach Julian Nagelsmann indicated that he is not planning significant changes. He defended the performances of Aleksandar Pavlovic and Felix Nmecha, stating they were doing a good job.

Nagelsmann also reiterated his confidence in Joshua Kimmich‘s role as a right-back, where he performed well during the EUROs. He expressed his reluctance to bench either Nmecha or Pavlovic, indicating that this is not his current plan. The German midfield’s statistics from the match against Ecuador included only one defensive contribution, six duels won out of 16 contested, 15 dispossessions, and an error that led to a goal.

A notable decision by Nagelsmann was the substitution of Nmecha, with Angelo Stiller entering the game instead of Leon Goretzka. Some observers suggested that Goretzka could have provided a stronger option to manage Ecuador‘s pressing tactics. The midfield’s performance against Ecuador‘s tenacious pressing highlighted a potential area for improvement if Germany aims to advance further in the knockout stages.

Germany, having already secured the top spot in their group, will now travel to Foxborough for their last-32 tie against another third-placed finisher on Monday. This will be their first World Cup knockout match since winning the trophy in 2014.
