Brazil secures knockout stage berth
Brazil advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup after a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. The win on Wednesday saw Vinicius Junior score twice, with Neymar also making his first appearance for Brazil in nearly three years. The match was held at a full Miami Stadium, with 64,478 fans in attendance.
Carlo Ancelotti‘s side topped Group C with seven points. This commanding performance ensured their progression in the tournament. Morocco finished second in the group after a 4-2 win over Haiti.
Match highlights and key players
Brazil’s first goal came early, just seven minutes into the game. Scotland boss Stephen Clark had anticipated an aggressive start from Brazil. The South Americans capitalized on a defensive error when Scott McKenna failed to clear the ball, allowing Rayan to set up an unmarked Vinicius. The Real Madrid forward took one touch to move the ball past goalkeeper Angus Gunn and tap it into an empty net.
Vinicius nearly scored a second goal before the first hydration break after taking the ball from Jack Hendry. However, the goal was overturned by the referee for a foul by the Brazilian following a VAR check, providing a reprieve for Scotland.
Despite the overturned goal, Brazil maintained pressure. They were more combative in winning the ball back throughout the first half. Scotland, on the other hand, struggled to create scoring opportunities and failed to capitalize on set-pieces, ending the first half without any shots on target.
Brazil extended their lead just before half-time. They won the ball high up the pitch, and Bruno Guimaraes delivered a cross to the far post, where Vinicius headed home his second goal of the match. This two-goal cushion allowed Brazil to showcase their full range of skills, with flicks and one-touch passes slicing through Scotland’s midfield.

In the second half, Brazil continued to press for a third goal. This came from another incisive move through the midfield, with Guimaraes securing his second assist of the game. He danced into the box before setting up Matheus Cunha, who scored his third goal of the tournament.
The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Neymar’s return. Ancelotti brought the 34-year-old onto the field for his first appearance in a Brazil shirt since October 2023. Neymar looked to combine with Vinicius, creating three chances in 13 minutes during his time on the pitch.
Scotland’s attacking efforts were largely ineffective throughout the match. Goalkeeper Alisson remained a solid presence in goal for Brazil, denying Scotland a late chance in the final minutes and helping his team keep a clean sheet. Scotland finally tested Alisson for the first time in the 64th minute, but the goalkeeper parried a header.
Following the match, Scotland boss Steve Clarke expressed disappointment, stating, “We gave them the goals, we gave them the game we wanted. We’re disappointed.” The result leaves Scotland with three points and a goal difference of minus three, awaiting to see if they can qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
