T20 World Cup Cricket Match: India Triumphs Over England in Semifinal

“Feels really great. To be honest, I kind of knew that I got some form going from the last game, so I thought I need to continue,” said Sanju Samson after leading India to a thrilling victory over England in the second semifinal of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Samson’s impressive performance, scoring 89 runs off just 42 balls, was pivotal in India’s narrow 7-run win.

The match, held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, saw India post a formidable total of 253-6 in their innings. England, in response, put up a valiant effort, finishing at 246-7. Jacob Bethell was the standout performer for England, scoring a remarkable 105 runs off 48 balls, but it was not enough to secure a place in the final.

Prior to the match, India, the defending champion of the T20 World Cup, was under pressure to perform. The stakes were high as they faced a strong England side, known for their explosive batting and competitive spirit. Samson’s innings, which included 19 sixes and 18 fours, showcased his ability to capitalize on the batting-friendly conditions at Wankhede.

Samson reflected on the team’s strategy, stating, “Knowing, playing in Wankhede, we know that no score is stoppable here, so I just wanted to get as much as possible, runs as possible.” His aggressive approach set the tone for India’s innings, allowing them to build a substantial lead.

Shivam Dube also contributed significantly to the team’s total, scoring 43 runs off 25 balls, while Hardik Pandya added a quickfire 27 runs off 12 balls. The Indian batting lineup’s depth was evident as they capitalized on every opportunity to score runs.

On the bowling front, Will Jacks was the pick of the England bowlers, finishing with figures of 2-40. However, the English side faced a setback when Harry Brook dropped a crucial catch at mid-off when Samson was on just 15 runs, a moment that could have changed the course of the match.

As the match concluded, Samson praised his team, saying, “I think that’s what we were talking about in the dressing room as well. So yeah, very happy how the team turned up today and all credit goes to Jasprit Bumrah, the world class bowler, once in a generation bowler.” Bumrah’s performance, along with the team’s collective effort, secured India’s place in the final.

Looking ahead, India will seek a record third T20 World Cup title against New Zealand. The anticipation builds as fans await what promises to be an exciting final.
