How it unfolded

The crisis in West Asia has been unfolding for over three weeks, creating a complex web of challenges for India. With extensive trade relations with countries embroiled in the conflict, the situation has escalated into a pressing concern for the Indian government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been at the forefront, engaging with leaders from Gulf nations, Iran, Israel, and the United States to navigate the turbulent waters of international diplomacy.

As the conflict intensified, the Indian government took immediate steps to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad. Notably, nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making their well-being a top priority. To date, more than 3,75,000 Indians have safely returned to India since the onset of the war, a testament to the government’s proactive measures, including the establishment of 24/7 control rooms and emergency helplines.

In a recent address, PM Modi emphasized the global call for a resolution to the crisis, stating, “The whole world is urging all parties for the earliest possible resolution of this crisis.” This sentiment reflects India’s unique position, as the conflict not only poses humanitarian challenges but also threatens economic stability, particularly in energy supply chains. Modi’s administration has been closely monitoring global developments to protect both consumer and industry interests.

India’s energy security is another critical aspect of this situation. The country boasts a Strategic Petroleum Reserve of over 53 lakh metric tonnes, which serves as a buffer against potential disruptions in oil supply. Furthermore, India has diversified its energy import sources from 27 to 41 countries over the past 11 years, showcasing a strategic approach to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions.

In addition to energy concerns, the conflict has had immediate repercussions on education for Indian expatriates. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has canceled scheduled Class 10th and 12th examinations in Indian schools located in Gulf countries, highlighting the widespread impact of the crisis on daily life.

Modi’s diplomatic efforts have also included discussions on critical issues such as the de-escalation of tensions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil shipments. “India has raised the issue of de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” Modi noted, underscoring the importance of maintaining open trade routes amidst the conflict.

As the situation continues to evolve, the Indian government remains vigilant, with ongoing efforts to address supply chain disruptions caused by the conflict. Modi stated, “Continuous efforts are also underway to determine how we can overcome the disruptions that have occurred in the supply chain.” This proactive stance is crucial for ensuring that India can navigate the complexities of the crisis while safeguarding its national interests.

Overall, the sequence of events surrounding the West Asia conflict is significant not only for the Indian government but also for the millions of Indians affected by the turmoil. As Modi leads the nation through these challenging times, the implications of this crisis will resonate across various sectors, from energy to education, shaping India’s future in the international arena.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has entered its fourth week with no clear signs of easing. This geopolitical instability has begun to ripple through global markets, and today, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is feeling the effects acutely.

On March 19, 2026, Singer India made its debut on the NSE, but the excitement was short-lived as its shares plummeted by 7.9%, closing at ₹70.43. This decline reflects broader market sentiments, with the S&P BSE Sensex dropping 1,542.94 points to settle at 72,990.02, and the NSE Nifty50 slipping 515.20 points to 22,599.30.

The market downturn has led to an erosion of investor wealth estimated between Rs 9–9.5 lakh crore. Such a significant loss raises concerns about the overall health of the Indian stock market and its resilience in the face of external shocks.

Adding to the economic strain, the Indian rupee has fallen to a record low of 93.89 against the US dollar. This depreciation is compounded by rising crude oil prices, with Brent crude trading at $112.94 per barrel and WTI crude at $99.23 per barrel, further straining the economy.

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, a noted market analyst, commented, “The uncertainty around the war is driving a global risk-off mood.” His insights underscore the pervasive anxiety among investors, who are grappling with the implications of escalating tensions in West Asia.

He further stated, “There is nothing that investors can do during this crisis characterised by huge uncertainty.” This sentiment reflects a growing concern that the current geopolitical climate may hinder market recovery.

As the situation develops, market observers are closely monitoring the impacts of these events on investor confidence and market stability. The ongoing conflict and its ramifications for global markets will likely dictate the trajectory of the NSE in the coming weeks.

While the immediate future appears bleak, analysts suggest that recovery may depend on geopolitical developments and economic policy responses. Investors are urged to remain vigilant as the market navigates these turbulent waters.

As the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament was set to commence on March 28, 2026, anticipation was high among chess enthusiasts and participants alike. However, just days before the tournament, a significant development occurred that would alter the landscape of the event.

On March 22, 2026, FIDE confirmed that Koneru Humpy, a prominent figure in women’s chess and a two-time Women’s World Rapid Champion, had officially withdrawn from the tournament. Humpy cited personal safety and well-being as her primary reasons for this decision, expressing her concerns regarding the current circumstances in Cyprus, where the tournament is being held.

Humpy’s withdrawal is particularly noteworthy given her status as a runner-up at the 2025 Women’s World Cup, which had qualified her for this prestigious tournament. The event, running from March 28 to April 16, 2026, is crucial as it determines the challenger for the Women’s World Championship.

In her statement, Humpy emphasized, “No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances.” This sentiment reflects the broader concerns regarding safety in the region, influenced by ongoing tensions in West Asia.

In light of Humpy’s withdrawal, Anna Muzychuk has been announced as her replacement, ensuring that the tournament will still feature strong competitors. However, the Cyprus Chess Federation, represented by President Criton Tornaritis, expressed disappointment over Humpy’s decision, criticizing her comments about safety in Cyprus. Tornaritis remarked, “It was a bad move,” indicating the federation’s frustration with the situation.

Despite the absence of Humpy, India will still be represented in the tournament through players R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh. This ensures that the Indian chess community maintains a presence in this significant event.

The implications of Humpy’s withdrawal extend beyond the tournament itself, as it highlights the ongoing safety concerns that can affect international events. The chess community is left to grapple with the realities of hosting competitions in regions facing geopolitical tensions.

As the tournament approaches, the chess world watches closely, not only for the games that will unfold but also for the broader discussions surrounding safety and the impact of regional conflicts on sports. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments related to Humpy’s situation or the tournament’s security measures.

How it unfolded

As the crisis in West Asia has unfolded over the past three weeks, the implications for India have become increasingly significant. With extensive trade relations with the countries involved in the conflict and nearly one crore Indians living and working in the Gulf, the stakes are high. Prime Minister Modi has been at the forefront, engaging with leaders from Gulf nations, Iran, Israel, and the United States to address the escalating situation.

On the ground, the humanitarian impact is palpable. Since the onset of the war, more than 3,75,000 Indians have safely returned to India, a testament to the government’s proactive measures. The establishment of 24/7 control rooms and emergency helplines for Indians abroad reflects the urgency of the situation. Modi emphasized, “The whole world is urging all parties for the earliest possible resolution of this crisis,” highlighting the global call for peace.

In addition to the immediate humanitarian response, the Indian government is also focused on the economic repercussions of the conflict. The crisis has created unprecedented economic pressures, particularly concerning energy security. India possesses a Strategic Petroleum Reserve of more than 53 lakh metric tonnes, which is crucial as the nation navigates potential disruptions in oil supply. Modi’s administration has expanded energy import sources from 27 to 41 countries over the past 11 years, a strategic move that may mitigate some risks associated with the conflict.

Moreover, the impact of the conflict has extended to education, with the CBSE cancelling scheduled Class 10th and 12th examinations in Indian schools across Gulf countries. This decision underscores the extent to which the crisis is affecting daily life for Indian expatriates. Modi noted, “India’s concerns are naturally greater, and therefore it is essential that a united and unanimous voice goes out to the world from India’s Parliament on this crisis,” emphasizing the need for a cohesive national response.

As the situation continues to evolve, the Indian government remains vigilant. Modi stated, “Continuous efforts are also underway to determine how we can overcome the disruptions that have occurred in the supply chain.” This proactive approach is critical as the nation seeks to protect both consumer and industry interests amidst global uncertainties.

In the energy sector, India has made remarkable strides, with solar power capacity surging from approximately 3 gigawatts to 140 gigawatts in the past 11 years. This diversification of energy sources is vital as the country faces potential supply chain disruptions due to the ongoing conflict. Additionally, India has set a record of producing 100 crore tonnes of coal for the second consecutive year, further bolstering its energy security.

As the crisis in West Asia continues to unfold, the implications for India are profound. The government’s response, led by Prime Minister Modi, reflects a blend of humanitarian concern and strategic foresight. The ongoing developments will be closely monitored, as they hold significant consequences for the millions of Indians affected by the conflict.

A sudden surge in panic buying has gripped Ahmedabad due to misinformation about a petrol shortage. Officials assure that adequate supplies are available.

The post Petrol Shortage in Ahmedabad: Panic Buying Amid Misinformation appeared first on bangalinews.

The panic surrounding a petrol shortage in Ahmedabad has escalated in recent days, with long queues forming at fuel stations across the city. This situation has been exacerbated by a wave of panic buying, as residents rush to fill their tanks amid fears of an impending fuel crisis. The backdrop to this frenzy is a complex interplay of misinformation and logistical challenges affecting supply.

Despite the visible chaos at petrol pumps, the state government has reassured citizens that there is sufficient stock of petrol and diesel in Gujarat. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has publicly urged residents not to succumb to panic, stating, “There is enough stock of petrol and diesel available in the state and so people need not do hoarding or panic.” This message aims to quell fears that have taken root following rumors circulating on social media, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has raised global concerns about oil supply.

Adding to the confusion, the Indian Oil Corporation has confirmed that adequate supplies of petrol and diesel are available in Gujarat. Sujata Sharma, a spokesperson for the corporation, emphasized that “These are not dry outs. We have checked it from the field and all petrol pumps are working normally and adequate fuel is available at all such facilities.” This statement seeks to counter the narrative of a fuel shortage that has taken hold in the public consciousness.

However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Approximately 30-40% of retail outlets in Gujarat are currently facing supply issues due to logistical difficulties. Several petrol pumps in Ahmedabad have temporarily shut down as they grapple with these challenges. The panic buying situation has been further fueled by misinformation related to the war in West Asia, which has led to fears of rising oil prices and potential shortages.

The price of crude oil has surged dramatically, increasing from USD 60 to USD 118-120 per barrel, a trend that has undoubtedly contributed to the anxiety among consumers. This spike in prices has been attributed to the refining losses faced by oil marketing companies, prompting the implementation of an advance payment policy for fuel dealers. Such measures have only added to the uncertainty surrounding fuel availability.

In response to the situation, the government is closely monitoring the fuel supply and holding regular review meetings to ensure that the situation does not escalate further. Harsh Sanghavi reiterated the government’s commitment, stating, “The government is fully prepared to ensure that petrol and diesel are available at all pumps.” This proactive approach aims to restore public confidence in the fuel supply chain.

The wider picture

As the situation unfolds, observers note that India currently has a 70-day reserve of crude oil, indicating that there is no immediate shortage. Fuel retailers have reported a 5% increase in petrol supply and a 10% increase in diesel supply compared to two months ago, which suggests that the supply chain is not as dire as it may seem. Nonetheless, the panic buying has created a self-fulfilling prophecy, where fear leads to hoarding, further straining the available resources.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for citizens to remain informed and not to give in to the panic fueled by social media rumors. Harsh Sanghavi has urged the public to “not pay attention to rumours being spread through social media or WhatsApp.” As the government works to stabilize the situation, the hope is that rationality will prevail over panic, allowing for a return to normalcy in fuel supply across Ahmedabad.

Current Petrol Prices in Chennai

As of March 11, 2026, the petrol price in Chennai stands at ₹100.80 per litre, while diesel is priced at ₹92.39 per litre. These figures reflect the ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices that are influenced by various global and local factors.

Immediate Circumstances

The recent surge in petrol prices has raised concerns among consumers, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has historically impacted oil supply and pricing. However, government sources have indicated that despite these geopolitical tensions, petrol and diesel prices in India are expected to remain stable for the time being.

Market Influences

Petrol prices in India are primarily influenced by global crude oil prices and local taxes. Currently, the crude oil price is around $90 per barrel. Experts suggest that any increase in petrol and diesel prices is unlikely unless crude oil prices exceed $130 per barrel. This threshold is critical as India imports nearly 90% of its crude oil requirements, making the country particularly sensitive to global oil market fluctuations.

Government Assurances

In response to public concerns regarding fuel shortages, particularly in light of reports about LPG shortages, government officials have reassured the public that India has sufficient fuel reserves. The country holds approximately 250 million barrels of crude and refined petroleum products, providing a supply buffer of around 7-8 weeks. Government sources have stated, “Petrol and Diesel prices are unlikely to increase as we have enough stock.”

Public Sentiment

Despite the assurances from officials, there remains a level of apprehension among the public. Dhruv Ruparel, a local resident, expressed concerns, stating, “There is a shortage of LPG, and people are speculating that there’s a shortage of petrol and diesel as well.” This sentiment reflects the anxiety surrounding fuel availability and pricing amid uncertain global conditions.

The current situation is set against a backdrop of fluctuating global oil prices and the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has historically influenced fuel costs in India. As the nation navigates these challenges, the government’s ability to maintain stable fuel prices will be closely watched by consumers and analysts alike.

Looking Ahead

As the situation develops, the focus will remain on global crude oil prices and their potential impact on domestic fuel pricing. While the government has indicated stability for now, the dynamics of international oil markets could change rapidly, affecting future pricing strategies.

Current Petrol Prices in Bangalore

The petrol price in Bengaluru has reached ₹102.92 per litre as of March 11, 2026. This increase reflects ongoing concerns about fuel supply and pricing in the region, particularly in light of international developments.

Diesel prices in Bengaluru are currently set at ₹88.99 per litre. Despite these figures, petrol prices across India remained unchanged on the same date, indicating a broader trend in fuel pricing.

Impact of International Crude Oil Prices

International crude oil prices are hovering around $90 per barrel, which has contributed to the current pricing structure in India. While there is no immediate shortage of petrol and diesel at any pump in the country, the situation remains fluid.

Concerns have been raised among Bengaluru auto drivers regarding potential LPG shortages due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Most autorickshaws in the city operate on LPG, making the price of ₹79 per litre particularly significant for drivers.

Concerns Among Drivers

Dhruv Ruparel, a local driver, expressed worries, stating, “There is a shortage of LPG, and people are speculating that there’s a shortage of petrol and diesel as well.” This sentiment is echoed by T.M. Rudramurthy, who noted that any disruption in the supply chain could directly impact auto services across the city.

Prasanath Kumar also highlighted the potential for future issues, saying, “While there is no immediate shortage, delays in supply from distributors could quickly lead to fuel scarcity.” This uncertainty adds to the anxiety among drivers and consumers alike.

Looking Ahead

As the situation evolves, the implications of the West Asia conflict on fuel prices and availability in Bangalore remain a critical concern. Details remain unconfirmed, and further developments are expected as the geopolitical landscape changes.

Indian Gas Shortage: Supply Disruptions and Rising Prices

Indian families are grappling with an acute cooking gas shortage as the ongoing conflict in West Asia disrupts vital supply chains. India, the world’s second-largest buyer of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), sources over 90% of its supplies from the Middle East, making it particularly vulnerable to geopolitical tensions.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, India consumed 31.3 million tonnes of LPG but managed to produce only 12.8 million tonnes domestically. This heavy reliance on imports has intensified the crisis, especially after Qatar, one of India’s top suppliers, declared a production stoppage for LNG and associated products last week.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has responded by ordering all oil refining companies to maximize LPG production for household cooking. “All oil refining companies operating in India shall maximise and ensure that Propane and Butane streams produced, recovered, fractionated or otherwise available with them are utilised for production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG),” the ministry stated.

As a result of these supply disruptions, the price of a 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinder has surged by Rs 60, now costing Rs 913 in Delhi. This price increase is particularly concerning for the 33 crore active LPG connections across the country, which are now at risk, as domestic cooking needs take precedence over commercial demands.

Approximately 54% of India’s total natural gas consumption is met through liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, highlighting the critical nature of these supply chains. GAIL, a major player in the gas sector, has reported that its long-term supplier, Petronet LNG Limited, issued a force majeure notice, effectively reducing LNG allocations to zero.

In an effort to mitigate the crisis, public sector oil marketing companies have locked in 2.2 million tonnes of US Gulf Coast imports for 2026, which accounts for 10% of India’s annual needs. However, the ongoing conflict raises questions about the long-term viability of these arrangements.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact impact of the West Asia conflict on future gas supplies, as observers await further developments. The situation remains fluid, and the long-term sustainability of production at current spot prices is also in question.

As the crisis unfolds, it is clear that India’s heavy reliance on imports, particularly those that pass through the Strait of Hormuz, complicates efforts to ensure price stability and supply security for its growing energy needs.
