PM Kisan 22nd Installment to Benefit Over 9.32 Crore Farmers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 22nd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) from Guwahati, Assam, on March 13, 2026. This installment will see an amount of more than ₹18,640 crore transferred directly into the bank accounts of over 9.32 crore farmer families across India.

With this latest installment, the total amount transferred under the PM Kisan scheme will exceed ₹4.27 lakh crore. Each eligible farmer family receives financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year, disbursed in three equal installments. This initiative has been crucial in supporting farmers, particularly in rural areas, by providing them with essential financial resources.

Notably, over 2.15 crore women farmers will receive financial assistance in this installment. The scheme has been instrumental in boosting demand in the rural economy and reducing farmers’ dependence on debt, according to Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who emphasized that “this timely assistance helps farmers purchase essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides.”

The PM Kisan scheme, initiated in February 2019, operates through India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the distribution of funds. Farmers can complete their e-KYC from home using a face-authentication-based mobile app, which simplifies the process of verifying their eligibility.

Additionally, the ‘Know Your Status (KYS)’ module allows beneficiaries to check their payment status and eligibility easily. The government has also introduced a ‘Voluntary Surrender’ facility for affluent farmers, ensuring that benefits reach genuine farmers who need them the most. A robust verification system is in place to remove ineligible or deceased beneficiaries from the list, further enhancing the integrity of the scheme.

Chouhan remarked, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Central Government has placed the welfare of farmers at the heart of policy-making.” The PM-KISAN scheme has not only provided financial relief but has also encouraged agricultural investment, contributing to a significant increase in food grain production, which rose from 252 million tonnes in 2014 to 357 million tonnes in 2025.

As the release date approaches, observers are keen to see how the funds will impact the agricultural sector and rural livelihoods. The ongoing commitment to supporting farmers through such initiatives remains a critical focus for the government. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional measures that may accompany this installment to further enhance the benefits for farmers.

The Amul-style cooperative model is gaining traction in Odisha, aiming to enhance rural economies through dairy and fisheries initiatives.

What is the significance of Amul’s cooperative model in Odisha?

The recent inauguration of development projects in Odisha highlights the potential of the Amul-style cooperative model to transform rural economies. On March 7, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated projects worth more than Rs 3,770 crore, emphasizing the importance of the cooperative sector in enhancing local livelihoods.

Among the initiatives launched are efforts from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED). Shah noted that these projects aim to establish dairy cooperatives across villages in Odisha, which could significantly boost the state’s dairy and fisheries sectors.

Shah pointed out that Odisha possesses substantial potential for expanding these activities through cooperative frameworks. He stated, “Today in Gujarat, through 3.6 million rural women, Amul became a movement, and today Amul does business worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore,” showcasing the success of the cooperative model in Gujarat.

The government’s commitment to the cooperative model is further illustrated by its willingness to support the transformation of Kerala’s MatsyaFed into a national-level cooperative institution akin to Amul. George Kurian, a representative of the Central Government, remarked, “If the Kerala government proposes a comprehensive development plan, the Centre would extend financial and technical support to scale up MatsyaFed into a nationwide cooperative framework.”

In addition to dairy initiatives, the projects also include a new sulphuric acid stream at the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), aimed at bolstering domestic fertilizer production. This diversification reflects a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.

As part of these initiatives, 690 beneficiaries are expected to receive training in fisheries-related activities, while 400 women are set to undergo leadership and entrepreneurship training. These educational programs are designed to empower local communities and foster economic independence.

The cooperative sector has historically played a transformative role in strengthening rural economies in India. With the ongoing support from the government and the successful model established by Amul, similar initiatives may soon flourish across other states.

While the immediate impact of these projects is promising, details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific timelines for implementation and the extent of community engagement. The success of these initiatives will depend on effective collaboration between government bodies and local stakeholders.
