Nensi Patel Makes History

Nensi Patel has made history by becoming the first Indian-born cricketer to represent the New Zealand women’s cricket team. This significant milestone was celebrated on February 25, 2026, when Patel received her White Ferns cap during a ceremony held at Seddon Park in New Zealand.

Patel’s journey to this achievement is remarkable. Born in Karamdi village, Gujarat, India, she moved to New Zealand with her family at the age of six. Her early exposure to cricket came from her father, Hitesh Patel, who was her first coach and has been a constant source of support throughout her career.

In her recent performances, Patel showcased her talent by becoming the joint-highest wicket-taker in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, claiming five wickets. Additionally, she contributed to the ODI series by taking two wickets across three matches. Her impressive skills have been honed over nearly a decade with the Northern Districts, where she has also scored 290 runs in the domestic competition, including three half-centuries.

Patel expressed her excitement about representing New Zealand, stating, “It’s an incredibly special moment. Personally, it’s a dream come true. Being able to represent New Zealand at this level is both an honour and a responsibility.” Her passion for the sport is evident, as she aims to inspire young kids of all backgrounds to strive for their goals, saying, “I hope to inspire not only young kids of Indian origin but all backgrounds to keep striving for their goals and dreams.”

In addition to her cricketing prowess, Patel holds a degree and works as a strength and conditioning coach, balancing her professional and athletic commitments. Her dedication to the sport and her community reflects her desire to motivate others, encapsulated in her personal mantra: “Kam karto ja, hak marto ja, madad taiyyar che,” which translates to “keep working hard and God will always support you.”

Patel’s debut with the White Ferns is not just a personal achievement; it signifies a broader narrative of diversity in world cricket. Her story adds to the rich tapestry of the sport, highlighting the increasing representation of players from various backgrounds.

Looking ahead, New Zealand’s women’s team is set to face South Africa for five T20Is and three ODIs at home, starting March 15. This upcoming series will provide Patel with further opportunities to showcase her skills on the international stage and continue her inspiring journey in cricket.
