Hardik Pandya’s potential Mumbai Indians exit

Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder for Mumbai Indians (MI), is reportedly at the centre of a significant player trade frenzy ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Following a challenging IPL 2026 campaign where MI finished ninth, Pandya and the franchise mutually agreed to part ways. This decision was reportedly influenced by mental exhaustion and a fractured dressing room environment.

According to reports, seven franchises have expressed interest in acquiring Pandya’s services. Among these, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are reportedly leading the pursuit. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have reportedly opted to remain out of the race for the 32-year-old all-rounder.

The trade is subject to MI’s management agreeing to release their captain and the successful navigation of financial logistics, which are crucial for what could be one of the largest transfers in IPL history. Communication channels are currently active between MI and interested franchises such as CSK and KKR.

Franchises vying for leadership roles

CSK reportedly entered the race for Pandya late but are now in contention with KKR, while RR also remains a strong contender. CSK appears to be a suitable option for Pandya in the post-MS Dhoni era, though a leadership role is not guaranteed there. In contrast, KKR is reportedly prepared to offer him the captaincy, and RR is also exploring a long-term leader in Pandya.

Two former international captains have reportedly shown interest in the trade, with one even offering the captaincy in early discussions, though no final agreement was reached. CSK is said to be quietly monitoring Pandya’s trade status and is well-positioned to secure his services, similar to their past blockbuster trades involving Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran. However, player consent and negotiations between franchises are still necessary, meaning late complications cannot be ruled out.

Pandya’s return to MI in 2024 saw him take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. This leadership change, despite the presence of other senior players, reportedly upset many fans. Since 2024, MI’s performance has been inconsistent, with the team qualifying for the knockouts only once in 2025. They finished tenth in 2024 and ninth in 2026. This period also saw Pandya’s individual form dip, as he managed 206 runs at a strike rate of 138.25 and claimed four wickets in 10 games during the 2026 season. He was also reportedly involved in several off-field controversies.

Implications for Mumbai Indians and other players

The outcome of Pandya’s potential trade could also influence MI’s future decisions regarding another high-profile Indian cricketer. Should both senior players depart, reports suggest that MI might shift towards a youthful rebuilding phase. If MI opts for an all-cash deal for Pandya, it remains to be seen whether they would pursue a similar arrangement for his India and MI teammate.

Pandya’s initial return to MI was itself a result of an all-cash deal, reportedly valued at ₹15 crore, ahead of IPL 2024. This move followed his successful tenure leading Gujarat Titans to back-to-back IPL finals, including a title win in 2022. He had spent seven seasons with MI since his debut in 2015 before his move to Gujarat Titans. Pandya’s contract with MI reportedly concluded after the IPL 2026 season, fueling the current trade rumours.
