AIIMS Mangalagiri has emerged as a pivotal institution in the realm of medical education and healthcare in Andhra Pradesh. Established in 2018, the institute has witnessed a remarkable growth trajectory, beginning with an initial intake of 50 MBBS students and now accommodating 748 students. This year, AIIMS Mangalagiri conferred degrees on 49 MBBS graduates, five MD/MS postgraduate students, and four Post-Doctoral Certificate Course students, marking a significant milestone in its academic journey.

The institution has not only focused on education but has also prioritized patient care, having completed an impressive 31 lakh outpatient department (OPD) consultations. Currently, the hospital sees a daily footfall of around 3,500 to 4,000 patients, underscoring its critical role in the healthcare landscape.

In a recent development, AIIMS Mangalagiri has taken a significant step towards enhancing its diagnostic capabilities by installing a Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) system. This advanced system, which cost approximately ₹1.73 crore, is the first of its kind among all AIIMS in South India. It enables the early identification of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, thereby enhancing patient safety by significantly reducing the diagnostic window period.

Union Minister Anupriya Patel highlighted the government’s commitment to the medical sector, stating, “The Union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving utmost priority to the medical sector.” This sentiment reflects the broader governmental initiatives aimed at safeguarding the health needs of the country’s underserved populations.

Ahanthem Singh, a representative from the institute, emphasized the importance of the NAAT system, noting that it enhances safety and improves diagnostic efficiency. This technological advancement is expected to bolster the hospital’s capabilities in managing infectious diseases.

As AIIMS Mangalagiri continues to grow, observers anticipate further developments in both its educational offerings and healthcare services. The integration of advanced diagnostic tools is likely to attract more patients and enhance the quality of care provided.

With its dual focus on education and patient care, AIIMS Mangalagiri is poised to become a leading institution in the region, contributing significantly to the healthcare sector and setting a benchmark for medical education in India.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been active in addressing mental health issues and regulatory compliance in medical education in India.

Recent Initiatives by the NMC

The National Medical Commission (NMC), which replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2020, has been focusing on several key initiatives aimed at improving medical education and healthcare standards in India. One significant development occurred in August 2024 with the launch of the National Medical Register (NMR), designed to create a centralized database of licensed allopathic doctors.

As of now, the NMC has received a total of 10,411 applications for NMR registration in the first eight months since its launch. However, a staggering 98% of these applications have not been approved. Dr. K.V. Babu, who was among the first to apply for NMR registration, expressed frustration over the process, stating, “I applied early in the morning, at 4 o’clock, just as the portal was launched, but it did not happen. I am still not registered.” This highlights the challenges faced by medical professionals in navigating the new registration system.

In response to growing concerns regarding student mental health, the NMC has issued a mandatory advisory for medical colleges to report student suicides and strengthen mental health support. This initiative aligns with a directive from the Supreme Court of India, which emphasized the need for institutions to address mental health issues and prevent suicides on campuses. The court ordered the NMC to ensure that these concerns are prioritized, particularly for students aged 15-29.

Furthermore, the NMC has instructed medical colleges to maintain accurate records of student suicides or unnatural deaths and submit monthly Action Taken Reports (ATR) regarding mental health initiatives. The NMC has also proposed mandatory training in basic clinical procedures for undergraduate students to enhance their practical skills.

As the NMC continues to work on the rollout of the National Exit Test (NExT), consultations with stakeholders are ongoing. Dr. Abhijat Sheth noted that “the technical framework has largely been worked out” and that the next stage involves wider consultations to ensure smooth implementation. This test is expected to standardize the exit process for medical graduates across the country.

Despite these advancements, the NMC faces challenges, including staffing gaps with several key posts remaining vacant for extended periods. Non-compliance with the NMC’s regulations could attract regulatory action, as emphasized by the commission itself.

Overall, the NMC’s recent initiatives are crucial for improving the landscape of medical education and healthcare in India. The focus on mental health and regulatory compliance reflects a growing recognition of the importance of these issues in the medical community.
