The DMK has raised significant questions regarding the absence of anti-incumbency in BJP-ruled states, contrasting it with the struggles faced by opposition parties.

The post Governance: DMK Questions Anti-Incumbency in BJP-Ruled States appeared first on bangalinews.

“How is it that the anti-incumbency wave is only seen in opposition-ruled states?” This pointed question from the DMK highlights a curious political landscape where BJP-ruled states seem immune to voter backlash, even after years in power.

The DMK’s argument rests on a factual foundation. In states like Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has held power for nearly two decades, with only brief interruptions. Meanwhile, they have consistently secured re-election in Bihar and Assam, raising eyebrows about their apparent invulnerability.

This contrasts sharply with the experiences of opposition parties in regions such as Delhi and Punjab, where anti-incumbency sentiments have played a significant role in electoral outcomes. The DMK’s inquiry underscores a compelling narrative—why does this anti-incumbency sentiment not appear to affect BJP-ruled states?

The party further critiques media portrayals that frame the BJP as an unbeatable force. “We need to understand this reality,” a DMK spokesperson stated, suggesting that public perception may be skewed by selective reporting.

The situation is complicated by voter fragmentation, particularly in northern states, which tends to benefit the BJP. This fragmentation makes it increasingly challenging for opposition parties to mount successful campaigns against incumbents.

Moreover, rising prices and unemployment are pressing issues that the DMK emphasizes. Yet, these problems seem to have little impact on voter loyalty towards the BJP. The party has also criticized the focus on religious sentiments during elections—an approach they believe distracts from critical governance issues.

The DMK describes this phenomenon as a “puzzle” that needs deeper examination. Their leadership under Stalin has been marked by efforts to address local grievances, yet they find themselves questioning why similar efforts do not resonate against the BJP’s long-standing rule.

As political analysts watch closely, the next developments are anticipated as state elections loom. Will these questions lead to shifts in voter sentiment or remain rhetorical? Only time will reveal how this discourse shapes future electoral dynamics.

The wider picture

The controversy involves allegations of foreign assets and multiple passports related to the Chief Minister’s family. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been serving as the Chief Minister of Assam, is currently facing serious accusations from Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera. Khera claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, Sarma’s wife, holds passports from three different countries: the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt. This revelation has ignited a political firestorm, raising questions about the legitimacy of these claims and their implications for Sarma’s political future.

During a press conference held on April 5, 2026, Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma owns luxury properties in Dubai and has made significant investments in the United States, including a company with a budget of $34.67 billion. He further stated that one of the passports is a ‘golden card’ issued in Abu Dhabi, valid until March 13, 2027, while the Antigua and Barbuda passport was issued on August 26, 2021, and is valid until August 25, 2031. The Egyptian passport, according to Khera, was issued on February 13, 2022, and is valid until February 12, 2029.

In response to these allegations, Sarma threatened to sue Khera for defamation within 48 hours, describing the claims as “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.” He asserted that the accusations reflect the Congress party’s “deep frustration and panic” as they face the upcoming elections. Sarma’s comments suggest that he views these allegations as an attempt to undermine his leadership and distract from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda in Assam.

Sarma’s assertion that he and his wife would file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera indicates the seriousness with which he is treating these accusations. He claimed that the allegations suggest attempts to relocate abroad after losing elections, a statement that could resonate with voters who are concerned about the integrity of their leaders. With Assam having 126 Assembly seats, the stakes are high for both the BJP and Congress as they prepare for the elections.

Observers note that this controversy could have significant ramifications for the political landscape in Assam. The BJP-NDA coalition aims to secure 100 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, and any distraction from their campaign could prove detrimental. Sarma’s proactive legal response may be an attempt to regain control of the narrative and reassure his supporters that he is committed to transparency and accountability.

As the situation develops, both parties are likely to ramp up their efforts to sway public opinion. The Congress party may continue to leverage these allegations to challenge Sarma’s credibility, while the BJP will likely focus on countering these claims and emphasizing their governance record. The outcome of this controversy could play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral prospects of both parties in Assam.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of Riniki Bhuyan Sarma’s alleged foreign assets and the validity of the passports in question. As the political tension escalates, all eyes will be on Assam to see how this unfolding drama impacts the electoral landscape.

PM Kisan 22nd Installment to Benefit Over 9.32 Crore Farmers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 22nd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) from Guwahati, Assam, on March 13, 2026. This installment will see an amount of more than ₹18,640 crore transferred directly into the bank accounts of over 9.32 crore farmer families across India.

With this latest installment, the total amount transferred under the PM Kisan scheme will exceed ₹4.27 lakh crore. Each eligible farmer family receives financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year, disbursed in three equal installments. This initiative has been crucial in supporting farmers, particularly in rural areas, by providing them with essential financial resources.

Notably, over 2.15 crore women farmers will receive financial assistance in this installment. The scheme has been instrumental in boosting demand in the rural economy and reducing farmers’ dependence on debt, according to Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who emphasized that “this timely assistance helps farmers purchase essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides.”

The PM Kisan scheme, initiated in February 2019, operates through India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the distribution of funds. Farmers can complete their e-KYC from home using a face-authentication-based mobile app, which simplifies the process of verifying their eligibility.

Additionally, the ‘Know Your Status (KYS)’ module allows beneficiaries to check their payment status and eligibility easily. The government has also introduced a ‘Voluntary Surrender’ facility for affluent farmers, ensuring that benefits reach genuine farmers who need them the most. A robust verification system is in place to remove ineligible or deceased beneficiaries from the list, further enhancing the integrity of the scheme.

Chouhan remarked, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Central Government has placed the welfare of farmers at the heart of policy-making.” The PM-KISAN scheme has not only provided financial relief but has also encouraged agricultural investment, contributing to a significant increase in food grain production, which rose from 252 million tonnes in 2014 to 357 million tonnes in 2025.

As the release date approaches, observers are keen to see how the funds will impact the agricultural sector and rural livelihoods. The ongoing commitment to supporting farmers through such initiatives remains a critical focus for the government. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional measures that may accompany this installment to further enhance the benefits for farmers.

Voter Lists in West Bengal and Assam

“We have faith in the judicial system. Many people in the area are in panic. We have asked them not to worry. If necessary, we will organise a larger movement,” stated Zakir Hossain, reflecting the concerns surrounding the recent developments in voter registration processes in West Bengal.

The final voter list for West Bengal has been published, revealing a total of 6 crore 44 lakh 52 thousand 609 voters. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that 60 lakh 6 thousand 675 names are currently under adjudication, and 63 lakh 66 thousand 952 names have already been removed from the list. These figures highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the Election Commission as it works to ensure the accuracy of electoral rolls.

In the context of these developments, Byron Biswas, a representative of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), expressed strong opposition to what he described as a conspiracy to influence the elections. This sentiment underscores the political tensions in the region, particularly as parties prepare for upcoming electoral contests.

Meanwhile, in Assam, the final voter list was published on February 10, 2026, covering 126 assembly constituencies and including over 24.95 million voters. The list comprises 12,482,213 male voters, 12,475,583 female voters, and 343 third-gender voters, reflecting a diverse electorate.

The draft voter list for Assam initially contained 25,201,624 voters, but this number decreased by 243,485 to arrive at the final count. The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam noted that a house-to-house verification drive was conducted from November 22, 2025, to December 20, 2025, to ensure the integrity of the voter list.

As part of the electoral process, the period for submitting claims and objections in Assam was established from December 27, 2025, to January 22, 2026. This timeline is crucial for addressing any discrepancies that may arise in the voter registration process.

In West Bengal, the final publication of the voter list was postponed to February 14, 2026, following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Booth Level Officers completed their house-to-house verification by December 11, 2025, as part of this effort to maintain accurate electoral rolls.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has encouraged all citizens to actively participate in the SIR process, emphasizing that maintaining accurate and up-to-date electoral rolls is fundamental to free and fair elections. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of these voter lists will be closely monitored by all stakeholders involved.
